THANK YOU for this thread. Apple's non-specific dialog box and poorly-worded, vague kb article doesn't disambiguate whether the 'update' will be a full OS update or some minor, slipstreamed iTunes update (which IMO should have been reflected in App Store's Updates section, but why be consistent with 20 years of precedent, right?).

Firmware Update Required Catalina Patcher

Catalina Express Fall Boat Schedule became available for Reservations in early July. Return boats to Long Beach Mondays after both festival weekends, sold out immediately. Cat Express then added on Monday Mornings Oct. 25th, return boats to Long Beach at 7:50 am, 10:15 am & 2:15 pm. If you are using a Mac notebook, you need to plug it into AC power. Download macOS Catalina. If you’re using macOS Mojave, then you need to update software to get MacOS Catalina. To do this, click Apple menu System Preferences, and then select Software Update. Check this article to know how to update software on Mac. Installed all system updates (besides Catalina), and it auto restart while installing system updates, whamp! Hit with critical software update. So it's a loop again. (I did replace my screen with a third party repairman due to the 2016 MBP touch bar encountered backlight failed issue). Not sure if this is related.-Additional update.

Anyway, someone should let Apple support know this is a thing, because I was just told I HAD to update to Catalina to ever sync my iPhone (on iOS 13) ever again. That is simply false information.

Firmware Update Required Catalina

I just checked the App Store for updates. As expected, there were updates for several apps in order to add Big Sur support:

  • GarageBand
  • iMovie
  • Keynote
  • Numbers
  • Pages
  • Xcode

I clicked the “Update All” button to be informed “GarageBand can’t be installed on … because macOS version 11 or later is required.”

Patcher

Seriously? Big Sur just shipped yesterday and Apple has already made a flagship app incompatible with everything else?

Update

And why is it being presented on my list of updates if it’s incompatible? In the past, the App Store would never show incompatible updates.

This is absolutely shameless self-promotion. If they think this is somehow going to convince people to upgrade their comptuers to a new and untested operating system, they’re completely nuts.

UPDATE: Further investigation (see comments below) indicates that this was a mistake, not an intent to drop support for GarageBand on macOS versions 10.*. But at this time (November 17, 2020), the mistake has not yet been corrected.
